Eugene van der Merwe

Eugene van der Merwe was born in Pretoria in 1980, and grew up in Krugersdorp, Gauteng.  While travelling and working in the UK, US and Europe he developed a serious interest in photography after acquiring a camera to document his travels. He studied at The National College of Photography in 2002, where he completed the course Cum Laude, and was awarded as Student of the Year.

He has since worked as free lance photographer and in various capacities at the National College of Photography, where he is currently a lecturer at the Vega, Cape Town campus.

Eugene specializes in landscape photography, but his photography covers documentary, still life and traditional black and white imaging. Inspiration for his works comes from any finely crafted landscape imaging, especially the heroic landscapes by Ansel Adams, David Muench and Micheal Fatali, intimate, richly detailed images by David Ward and Christopher Burkett, and exquisitely composed “It feels like I could walk into the picture” photographs by Joe Cornish, Jack Dykinga and Paul Wakefield.

This is his first exhibition.
