Since childhood, painting has formed an important part of my awareness.

My working process involves the structuring of submerged memories
and significant stages of my life in a layered matrix of images.

I aim for images that provoke questions and responses from me and the
viewer.I would encourage the viewer to interpret freely and enter into a
dialogue with the paintings.

Recently, I’ve taken inspiration from artists like Doig and Tuymans,
who have shown the depth and life of – and sheer excitement of
interacting with – contemporary figurative painting.

While my awareness is rooted in South Africa, my work tends to depict
an imagined space, rather than being strictly representational.

But ultimately, what interests me about painting is the excitement of
the medium. These are works ‘about’ the interaction of colour, line
and space. I hope to fix the viewers’ attention with, in a sense, the
placement of resonant images in this medium, but do not really
consider these discrete elements. To me, the work is a continuous
interaction of line and colour, however these are represented.
