Eugene Hön



Eugene matriculated from the Tygerberg High School. He completed his BAFA at the Michaelis School of Fine Art and furthered it with his MFA (Cum Laude) in 1985. He finished his EDP through the University of Stellenbosch in 2001.

While working and lecturing at UJ Eugene has received a variety of Awards, grants and prizes, more recently the Ceramic Merit Award at the International Ceramics Biennale (APSA, 1998), Jewellex Collection Awards 2000 Finalist (jewellery council of SA awards) and the International Liaison Award (CIA and TWR) in 2003 where he travelled to India to establish links with India’s fashion, design and Institute of Science Technology and Development Studies.

Eugene’s work is found in a wide variety of collections, The Corobrick Collection, the SA National Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery, Durban Art Gallery, Sandton Civic, Altech collection and a variety of smaller private collections both abroad and in South Africa.

Eugene has involved himself fully not only in the art of making, but also in the wider circle of art publications, compititions, committees and community development. Eugene is a member of a variety of esteemed committees, societies and professional bodies. He is the co-founder of the Craft Council of South Africa (CCSA), a founder member of the Institute of Contemporary Art , he was the chair of the South African Ceramic Society (1999-2000) and the TWR Art Advisory Committee (1999- 2005) as well as being part of the Johannesburg Art Gallery committee until 2006. He was a key co-ordinator of the FNB Vita Crafts Now competitions (1991- 2000), been an external examiner, contributed in terms of co-ordination and editing to the Revue Noire, African Contemporary International Art Magazine, worked with the National Accreditation Committees as well as judged numerous competitions and presented a variety of workshops etc.

Academic’s teaching career is also impressive. He is currently the Senior Lecturer in Ceramic Design at the University of Johannesburg, but he has also been the HOD of the dept. of three dimensional design and the Executive Dean of FADA (2001 – 2006).

He held his first solo exhibition at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. He has since held solo exhibitions at the Market Theatre and the Sandton Civic Art Gallery. He has participated in various and numerous group exhibitions and co-ordinated The Long Road to... exhibition at Rau Gallery.
