Andile Dyalvane
Andile Dyalvane was born in Qoboqobo in the Eastern Cape. He studied at the then Sivuyile College in Gugulethu he later went to work for the 'Potters Shop' in Kalk Bay. While on an exchange program in Denmark, he was offered a scholarship to further his studies at the (then) Port Elizabeth Technikon. Andile loves the creative miracle of ceramics. He works with original surfaces treatments where clay ‘flesh’ is artistically cut open to resemble body Scarification from his culture. His main inspiration is his cultural heritage and he engages with and responds to it through his art....
Andile Dyalvane who is a much younger ceramicist … draws inspiration from traditional Xhosa designs, but interprets this for the contemporary market.
“I see myself as a designer and design modern work. I also use my culture as a reference and especially draw on “ukuqatshulwa” Xhosa scarification as a design element.”
